Thank you for this. We went based on reviews, turned to each other about half way through and asked, "Do you care even a little bit about what happens to any of these characters?" The answer: "Nah." We left.
"Song has quickly become beloved in critical circles but I’ve found both her films flimsy. There’s not much to them besides a logline—like Harry’s giant, impersonal apartment, her movies have obvious intent but hollow execution."
This really resonated with me, felt exactly the same about both films.
I agree with all of this and yet I had a really mostly great time at this movie, despite the Dallas audience (octogenarian couple behind me "WAIT WHERE'D THE BOYFRAND GO? OH THERE HE IS, HE'S ON THE STEPS, WAITIN' FOR HER." one example of about 15 during the movie). I find her directorial style very strange and whatever the opposite of endearing is - why does she think we want to see the most ANEMIC version of all her protagonists ? They're all so LACONIC and none of them are in real life. I couldn't help imagining her saying "smaller, SMALLER," in between takes...but...why? so odd! that said, i really enjoyed a lot of the writing about dating/class/modern courtship, and then was mildly bored whenever it circled back to the ex.
“Smaller, SMALLER” is so funny and well said. Just like a damn playwright!!
I do find Dakota Johnson extremely watchable. She appeals to my most slack jawed glazed over watching sensibilities … just a beautiful woman gliding through life in designer clothes.
There were times I thought Dakota Johnson's signature aloofness was actually perfect for her character (the "before" version, anyway), and her lack of onscreen chemistry with especially Pedro Pascal advantageous to a story about romantic calculation... but neither changed the fact this movie was *boring*, barely alive -- a crime whatever its genre assignation

Well put. I think the first 30 mins or so are fun and very juicy but by the end I was like please get me out of HERE!!!
