Best line of the night I am still unpacking: Ramy Youssef accepting the Oscar on behalf of Wes Anderson for Best Short Film. “We knew you could make them long, but wow.” It was a throwaway that most people didn’t even clock, but I happen to love the short form. It’s traditionally where you discover wonderful new voices. There’s part of me that is happy to have Wes bring some notoriety to the category and part of me that wants him to stay away and allow new artists to be recognized. Maybe first time filmmakers need their own category. Or maybe that’s what the Spirit Awards are for.
